Design Technology including Food

At Romans Field School, pupils are given the opportunity to design, make and evaluate a range of different products. At Romans Field School we follow Kapow’s learning plans for DT which ensure high quality planning and learning opportunities which are engaging and interesting for all pupils.

From year 1 pupils begin to develop ideas based on design briefs that are interesting and engaging. Pupils will work with a variety of materials, including fabric, wood and electronics, to create products that meet a need. This includes puppets, torches and a range of structures. The pupils develop their reflective practice by providing self and peer feedback to improve and develop their products.

At Romans Field we have a DT and Art room which enables pupils to experience a broader range of equipment and tools. Included in the DT equipment are specialist craft machines such as the Cricut maker which has been used to create vinyl iron-on designs and transfers.

To enhance Food Technology, we have 2 dedicated pupil kitchens, in the Primary and Secondary sites, providing space for groups to develop their independent cooking skills. We ensure that cooking is experienced regularly in the curriculum and offered as an enrichment opportunity. The curriculum is developmental from Key Stage 1 to Year 7. This means that the students will develop skills such as chopping soft fruit in year 1 to cooking and preparing meals as they move into the Secondary curriculum.

The Design Technology and Food curriculum help to inspire pupils’ creativity. The pupils can explore a range of career opportunities as they learn specific skills which can aspire them into future employment roles.
